This three-legged incense censer (koro) embodies Takaoka artistry, crowned by a lively foo dog (lion) finial, an emblem of guardianship and auspicious power. Intricate relief motifs encircle its body, telling stories drawn from China’s enduring classics. One panel beautifully illustrates the tale of Sima Guang 司马光砸缸, the young sage who, when his friend fell into a giant vat of water, calmly broke the vessel to save him — a parable celebrating clear-headed courage in moments of crisis. On the opposite side, it shows an erudite scholar in silent contemplation.
This koro is more than an incense burner; it is a sculpted narrative that marries literary heritage with the meticulous skill of traditional metal casting. A piece destined to be cherished, inviting both reflection and quiet admiration. Cast in bronze and finished with a rich koteiro (古手色) antique patina, it radiates timeless elegance, making it a perfect addition to refined interiors or the serene rituals of the tea ceremony.
Comes with a pack of Kodo ash.
Approximate size: 12cm x 10cm x 14.5cm.
