This exquisitely carved boxwood ruyi scepter is a celebration of symbolism and masterful craftsmanship. Sculpted in delicate openwork, the piece takes the form of a gnarled branch bearing the fingered citron commonly known as the Buddha's hand, entwined with meandering twigs and foliage. Its gracefully convoluted head blossoms with the three auspicious fruits: peach, pomegranate, and citron, collectively known as 三多 (three abundances) — peach being an emblem of longevity due to the myth of a fabled land located near Kunlun Mountains associated with an ancient goddess known as the Queen Mother of the West (多寿), pomegranate bursting with seeds symbolising fecundity and fertility (多子), and Buddha's hand 佛手柑 representing blessings (多福) due to a play of close sounding name and natural fragrance from the fingered form.
The scepter is adorned with a silk-like tassel with infinity knots and a jade ornament, evoking joy and harmony. Traditionally displayed in a scholar’s studio or altar, this Ruyi is not just an ornament, but a blessing made manifest — embodying grace, virtue, and heartfelt wishes for a life of abundance.
