Mysore Sandalwoods exists in many qualities and grades, and it has always been known to be the aromatic heartwood of the Santalum Album species that is most loved and treasured by many for the creamy, rich, sweet lactonic tones.
The heartwood of century old Mysore sandalwood trees are usually very oil rich, with a proportion of the oil aging and oxidizing, crosslinking naturally, to form a darker looking resin. In the grading of sandalwoods, heartwoods that have darker resinations that give the wood almost a dark reddish, dark brown, hue, is referred to as “Black Meat” sandalwood or “Dark Meat” meat sandalwood. This material is richly fragrant, deep with a heavy body, and is well loved by many collectors to be collected or carved into beads, pendants, statues and objects. The scraps from these artisans are then collected by KZ, graded, and then subjected to a cold milling process to create the powder that is used to make this incense. There is possibly no better mysore sandalwood material in the world than this, nothing supercedes the best that could ever come from nature, and under the masterful hands of KZ, to be perfectly calibrated in burning to give you this rich voluminous incense.

Sandalwood, Santalum album heartwood formation occurs when the tree starts to grow older and larger, with the heartwood being filled with aromatic oils in increasing concentration with age, in short decades you get a yellow oily heartwood that has volatile creamy florals, in many decades you get a dense reddish heartwood that is rich beyond words, and up to over a century or more, gets you the densest, resin rich heartwoods that are brown to even shades of black, which the chinese describe as “blackmeat”. Often or not, the heartwood diameters of “black meat” sandalwood are above one feet, one can only imagine how old or how huge the trees had to be to give heartwoods of such grades.
