This vintage Japanese incense burner is a superb example of Takaoka bronze ware (高岡銅器), celebrated for over 400 years as one of Japan’s finest metalworking traditions. Crafted in the elegant teppachi shape, the censer stands proudly on its broad base, with 象耳 (elephant trunk-style handles) adorned with delicate protruding tusks, adding a sense of regal balance and movement.
The lid features a dynamic foo dog (guardian lion) with an elaborately flared tail, standing vigilant atop the censer to ward off misfortune. The body is richly embellished with intricate relief carvings of a 山水 (sansui) landscape scene — complete with the majestic silhouette of Mount Fuji, tranquil waters, and traditional buildings nestled among pines — evoking timeless serenity.
Finished in a warm furute (古手色) patina, the piece glows with a soft coppery allure that only deepens with age. Ideal for the tea ceremony or as a distinguished display, this koro seamlessly combines mythic symbolism, natural beauty, and masterful Japanese craftsmanship into a captivating work of art.
Comes with a pack of Kodo ash.
Approximate size: 16cm x 14cm x 16cm.
