In the old courts of the Qing dynasty, when the corridors of the Forbidden City glowed in amber light and silk hems brushed against carved balustrades, the empress and imperial consorts carried with them a quiet companion — the 十八子, a bracelet that also serves as a shorter Tibetan Buddhist rosary. Eighteen perfect beads, strung not merely for ornamentation, but as a map of the cosmos, a reminder to remain awake amid splendor.
This 18-beads hand rosary, made from old amber 琥珀 warm as captured golden hued sunlight, continues that lineage. Each bead softens under the warmth of the hand, releasing the gentle, ancient calm for which amber was revered — to settle the soul, dissolve agitation, and protect the spirit (“安魂定魄”).
Between the amber glow flow spacers of pierced lapis lazuli, the ancient sky-stone beloved from Gandhara to Dunhuang, a gem once reserved for those who sought clarity, insight, and divine communication. Its blue carries the quiet gravity of temple murals, the colour Buddha-worlds were painted in. The lapis lazuli Buddha Head bead ends with two purple zitan wood beads tassels and a carved nephrite jade bead, a symbol of integrity and auspiciousness.
Though small, these eighteen beads contain a universe of teaching. They refer to the Eighteen Dhātu —Six Roots, Six Dusts, Six Consciousnesses, the full spectrum of human perception and delusion: firstly Six Roots: eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind, secondly, Six Dusts: form, sound, scent, taste, touch, dharmas and thirdly, the Six Consciousnesses: the six modes through which we interpret the world.
They are the gateways through which confusion arises… and through which awakening begins. To wear a 十八子 is to carry a reminder: guard the senses, refine perception, illuminate consciousness.
In dramas like 《Yanxi Palace 延禧攻略》 and 《Tale of Ruyi 如懿传》, we see the imperial consorts gently turning their individual 十八子 beads as they navigate the shifting winds of the palace. In truth, this gesture is a silent dialogue with the self — an act of staying centered in a world of illusion.
