Carved from black-skinned yellow nephrite pebble material (黑皮黄沁籽料), this pendant preserves the original river-worn skin that collectors prize as proof of authentic 籽料 origin. The dark outer skin contrasts beautifully with the warm yellow tones beneath, giving the carving depth and natural character that only true pebble jade can possess.

The subject is the formidable Zhong Kui (钟馗)—the legendary demon queller and guardian against malevolent forces. With stern expression and commanding posture, Zhong Kui is depicted subduing spirits, accompanied here by a small mischievous oni-like figure at the base bearing a coin motif. This references the auspicious theme “钟馗五鬼运财”—Zhong Kui commanding the five spirits to deliver wealth.

The legend of Zhong Kui traveled widely across East Asia and became deeply rooted in Japan, where he is known as Shōki. In Japanese tradition, Shōki appears in paintings and festival imagery as a fierce protector who subdues demons. Whether worn as a pendant or mounted with tassels for hand play, the piece embodies a potent charm: protection, command over adversity, and the auspicious summoning of wealth.
